Loci's Foci...

EIA

Loci’s core business is within the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) field.

Recently, new legislation has been implemented through the Environmental Assessment Act, 2005, by the Government of Botswana. This Act sets out explicit guidance within the environmental assessment process, in determining what the respective role and responsibility is for the local authority or land board, consultant and the developer.

Any EIA study of a proposed development undertaken must be regulated and approved by the Department of Environmental Affairs.

At Loci, we have been consistently busy in this new area of environmental consulting, leading our clients successfully through all stages of the EIA process. From Screening and Preliminary Impact Assessment and Public Consultations, through to Scoping phase and Terms of Reference writing and ultimately, the production of quality Environmental Impact Statements for approval by the relevant authorities.

Our positive approach and best practice has also resulted in a good working relationship between Loci Environmental and the Department, and Loci is proud to be on the DEA’s endorsed list of Environmental Consultants for undertaking EIA studies in Botswana.

EMP

Botswana is seeing a rise in the use of Environmental Management Plans as an integral tool in ensuring new and existing developments are being designed, built, and operated in a sustainable manner.

It is the job of the environmental management specialist to provide information and guidance to the client, concerning the environmental impacts of development activities and how to manage those impacts in order to reduce waste and prevent pollution. This may take place in several ways. Some examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Authoring and instituting a project Environmental Management Plan (EMP)
  • Carrying out regular site investigations and monitoring, or
  • Composing an Environmental Management System (EMS) for an organization to reduce its environmental impacts and increase its operating efficiency.

Environmental Monitoring

Loci is actively involved in a wide variety of Environmental Monitoring projects, including construction of airports, commercial developments, residential infrastructure projects, and others.

Under the EIA Act, the commitments made by the client within project EMPs must be enforced and monitored by a professional with experience in environmental management and mitigation, ensuring that any difficulties or non-compliance issues are addressed and resolved effectively.

Our vast experience in monitoring ensures that effective flow of information, communication, and compliance between SHE officers, employees, the Client, the Contractor, and the DEA is done expertly and reliably

Loci provides consultation and assistance to contractors and clients, endeavoring to ultimately minimize environmental impacts and increase efficiency when addressing areas for improvement.
